RESUMEN:

This colloquium describes our quest to understand the processes which happened in the early Universe by reproducing those conditions at the highest energy accelerators in the lab.

Thirteen years ago, the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world, the Large Hadron Collider LHC at the European Center for Particle Physics, CERN, started taking data. The LHC collides protons or heavy ions against each other, creating energy densities and states as they existed in the early universe. Of particular interest has been the question about the origin of mass, for which in the framework of the Standard Model the so-called Higgs boson is said to be responsible, as well as the search for exotic elementary particles beyond the Standard Model such as those presumed to constitute the Dark Matter in the Universe. I will describe our present knowledge in this field.

MINI BIO DEL EXPOSITOR:

Prof. Dr. Thomas Müller received the Diploma in Physics (1979) and Ph.D. in Physics (1983) from Bonn University.

He was a researcher at CERN (1984-1989), Professor at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (1990-1996) and professor and chair at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) (1996-2021), where he also is Distinguished Senior Fellow since 2021.

He was member of many University and Research Boards: Member of the Legislative Assembly UCLA; Head of Institut für Experimentelle Kern-/Teilchenphysik; Dean KIT Physics Faculty; Co-founder and member of GridKa Overview board; Co-founder and spokesman of the Karlsruhe Center of Excellence CETA; Member of the Senate of KIT; Member of LEP Committee; Member of the European Committee of Future Accelerators ECFA; Co-editor of Springer “Tracts in Modern Physics“; Member of the CERN Research Review Board; Member and Chair of the Scientific Review Board of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research; Chair of EUDET Advisory Board; Member of Advisory Board of the Austrian Academy of Science; Member of IUPAP C11; Member of the Executive Board of the European Physical Society.

Professor Müller received the following awards and distinctions: CERN Fellowship 1984-1985, SSC Fellowship (SDC Experiment) 1991-1993, Co-Spokesperson US-CMS 1994-1996, Spokesperson German CMS Groups 1999-2004 and 2015-2018, 2013 High Energy and Particle Physics Prize for the discovery of the Higgs boson (ATLAS, CMS), 2019 High Energy and Particle Physics Prize for the discovery of the top quark (CDF, D0)

Finally, Professor Müller actually is doing a stay in the Instituto Balseiro and Centro Atómico Bariloche supported by Programa Maldacena de Profesores Visitantes.
